Homemade Scratch Art

The kids loved making this!  They were all shocked when I told them we were going to cover their beautiful colorings with black paint.😂  It's a great way to reuse old crayon drawings (just fill in where there isn't color and then paint over!) and engages kids for quite a while!

What you need:

  • crayons
  • white card stock paper
  • black tempera paint
  • couple drops of dish soap
  • something to paint with
  • toothpicks/tools to scratch with
Start by covering your card stock with crayon.  Brighter colors will turn out more fun, as will using a variety of colors.

Next, mix some black tempera paint with a couple drops of dish soap and cover your crayon papers!  We did a couple coatings of paint on some of ours as they were still showing through.

Let dry completely and start scratching!  We just used toothpicks, because we were lame and hadn't bought anything more fun.  They worked fine, just be ready to go through a few for each kid as they get dull fairly quickly.  You can also use sharpened pencils or any fun little metal tools you want to get somewhere.  We'll be more creative next time around.👍
